Chapter 16

Sallie

Where were you when the great storm of ‘23 rattled western Wyoming? Me? I was laying between my living room floor and eight-time Grammy winner Adam Taylor.

It's one of those sounds that you’ll never forget. If you’ve ever had an 80 foot pine tree split your house in half while you were innocently admiring your new beige curtains, then you understand.

I didn’t know what happened at first. I know the power went out. I heard the crack and covered my ears as I turned to see what was happening behind me. The only thing in my vision was Adam’s broad chest headed right towards me at a speed that I’ve never seen any human move. Next thing I know we’re on the ground and there’s a tree where my back door used to be. A large tree. The rain and sap drenched us all at once but Adam caught most of it with his back.

“Sallie, Sallie, are you okay? Are you hurt? Sallie, please say something.” His voice is urgent and desperate as he quickly pushes onto his knees and assesses my body.

“Yes! Adam, I'm okay! Are you okay? Please be okay!” I run my hands over his upper body, subconsciously looking for flesh wounds.

“I’m okay but we need to get out. The roof could cave. Grab Tina and get back in the truck!”

Adam grabs my hand and quickly lifts me to my feet and pulls me out the front door. So much has changed in two brief minutes. We run to the truck and all jump in, including a soaked Tina. Thunder and lightning boom above us as rain and debris pelt the side of the truck. Adam lets go of the breath that he’s been holding and looks at me. “What a day.”

I look ahead at my poor little house and can see the tree protruding unnaturally from the roof. The shock wears off and I’m scared. “My house! What am I going to do! Are there any inns in Dove Creek? I can’t live with Iris. I love her so much but I…”

“You’re going to live with me while we get this sorted out,” Adam interrupts.

I whip around and look at him like he’s insane. “What! Adam, no. I couldn’t do that. It’s…no…that’s your space. I’ll figure it out.”

He cranks the truck and puts it in reverse and doesn’t respond until we’re out of my driveway. He leans forward and squints to see through the rain while pressing a button on the steering wheel that opens the enormous iron gate in front of us. Oh, we’re going to his house now. Adam Taylor’s house. Where he lives. The celebrity Adam Taylor. The gravity of the situation falls on me at once and I think I’m going to be sick. Having him in my house doesn’t seem to trigger my fight or flight response, but going to his house? That causes all kinds of weird anxiety that I don’t know what to do with.

“Sallie, I have seven bedrooms.
